Chapter Twenty-Three

By Sunday, the weather seemed to be on the turn. Mal looked out the window and was pleasantly surprised to see a pale blue sky. Grabbing her phone, she pulled up a weather app that suggested the day would be sunny. Although she’d learnt to mistrust Cornish forecasts, she decided to explore anyway. She would find some sunshine somewhere. Fingers crossed. Maybe. After yesterday’s altercation with Hugo, she’d had a bad night’s sleep and found herself worrying about money and what she was going to do with herself. A long walk was what she needed.

The problem with living by the sea was that forecasts were incredibly hard to predict unless a huge band of weather was affecting a large geographic area. In Cornwall, it got even trickier as the county was basically one long peninsula with the sea on either side, roughly eighteen miles apart. According to the locals, if rain was falling on one coast, they could just drive to the other side for blue skies. She hadn’t tested the statement yet, but she’d learnt to take forecasts with a massive pinch of salt.

That said, today she was going to get out of the building and explore. When she was first released from prison, she’d been warned that prisoners could find leaving the building difficult. Mal didn’t think she would be affected, but she was aware that she sometimes forgot that she didn’t need permission to do something. Every time she’d found herself thinking like that, she put on a pair of shoes and headed out, even if it was tipping it down.

Despite being cold and wet, she soon began to appreciate the freedom and fresh air. The best tonic was swimming; nothing was more liberating or better at reminding one of how big the universe was. But swimming was harder in winter when the water was freezing and the waves often unmanageable.

She decided to test her new wellies, which were apparently good for long walks. Mal had been showered with useful and thoughtful gifts this Christmas, a pair of walking wellies being one of them. Finding a flask in the back of one of the cupboards, she made some coffee, then a sandwich, and added another egg to the water. She could have a boiled egg for lunch as well as breakfast.

Having discovered she had no suitable backpack, she eyed up her Louis Vuitton handbag. It wasn’t the obvious choice, but it did have a shoulder strap, so she could sling it across her body.

An hour later, the weather looked set to stay fine. She headed out of the village on the coast path, rising higher and further away from the buildings, and up onto the cliffs standing between the sea and the farmland. As she passed the back of Jacques’ garden, she looked up to see if there was any smoke coming from his chimney. That was another revelation of moving out of London: people making fires as part of their daily lives, not just on a weekend break to the Cotswolds.
